Summary
The chapter opens with David and his men returning to Ziklag, only to find the town burned and its inhabitants taken captive by the Amalekites. In sorrow and fear, David prays and receives the ephod from Abiathar, seeking divine guidance. The LORD instructs him to pursue the Amalekites, and David leads a small force across the brook Besor. During the pursuit, they rescue an Egyptian servant who leads them to the enemy camp. David slaughters the Amalekites, retrieving all spoils and all captured people, including his two wives. A dispute arises over how to divide the spoils, but David asserts that all who fought should share equally. He declares this rule a statute for Israel. Finally, David distributes the recovered spoils to allies in various cities and regions.
