Summary
Jacob, fearing Esau’s wrath, sends gifts and splits his people into two groups. He crosses the Jabbok at night with his family and is left alone to wrestle with a mysterious man until daybreak. The man demands a blessing before letting Jacob go, and Jacob asks for his name, which the stranger reveals as Jacob himself. The stranger changes Jacob’s name to Israel, declaring that he has wrestled with God and prevailed. Jacob names the place Peniel, saying he saw God face to face, and the encounter explains why the Israelites refrain from eating the sinew of Jacob’s thigh.
